Our Mission is: ” To enhance the quality of life in Avondale by improving and strengthening neighborhoods, fostering self-reliance and instilling pride.”

The Neighborhood and Family Services Department was created in 2006 to support and nurture the development of families and the neighborhoods in which they live. The goal of the department is to enhance the quality of life and sense of community experienced by residents and families in Avondale’s many neighborhoods. The department includes: Old Town Revitalization, Citizen Liaison and HOA Support, Code Enforcement, Social Services, Youth Development Services, and Housing and Community Development.

Old Town Revitalization:
The Old Town Revitalization Area Division focuses on defining the vision for Old Town Avondale by encouraging new and reinvestment for commercial, employment and residential development.

HOA Support:
Staff work closely with residents and City departments to resolves issues on behalf of the City with homeowners' associations, neighborhood groups and other community organizations.

Code Enforcement:
The Code Enforcement Division enforces Avondale’s Property Maintenance Code, the Zoning Ordinance and various Municipal Codes.

Social Services:
The Social Services Division provides “safety net” services for residents through the Community Action Program, Community Outreach, and Financially F.I.T. Program.

Housing and Community Development:
The Community Development Block Grant Division works to provide a variety of affordable housing initiatives to the community through emergency repair, substantial rehabilitiation, homebuyer assistance and neighborhood stabilization programs.

Youth Services:
The Youth Services Division provides workforce development, leadership and other services with an emphasis on supporting the personal responsibility and life skills development of youth ages 14-20.

One of the goals of the department is to listen to the needs and desires of Avondale residents and to develop programs and strategies to address those needs. Consequently, the department houses three advisory bodies. The Neighborhood and Family Services Commission was created to provide guidance on strategies to strengthen neighborhoods and to assist with community outreach. The Social Services Advisory Board advises the department on the Community Action Program and other social services programs and services. The Youth Advisory Commission is a leadership and advisory opportunity for young Avondale residents.
