Water Conservation Rebate Programs
The intent of the Rebate Programs is to encourage a permanent reduction in the amount of water used inside and outside of the home by establishing financial incentives for Avondale customers with a water account with the City of Avondale. Customers will help by assisting the city’s water conservation efforts by installing specific water saving technologies, and be eligible to receive a rebate in the form of a check from the City.
This program is in an effort to conserve and protect the City’s limited water resources and to ensure compliance with the Arizona Department of Water Resources’ “gallons per capita per day” use requirement.
The city has implemented a multi-faceted Water Conservation Program to address water waste and misuse.
The program includes rebates up to; 1) $200 for installation of, or conversion to, Xeriscape Landscaping, 2) $5 and/or $75 for purchase and installation of a low-flow showerhead and/or low-flush toilet, respectively, and 3) $50 for purchase and installation of an automatic outdoor Irrigation Controller/Timer.
While monitoring individual water and cost savings is difficult, generalizations can be made based on water conservation studies completed in other large western cities. For example, converting a 1,000 square foot yard from turf to a low water use landscape generally results in a 25% reduction in overall residential use. This benefits both the City and the customer. Using the current rate structure, residential customers using 15,000 gallons per month, that reduce their overall use by 25% will see a monthly savings of approximately $10.00. If four customers convert to low water use landscape (Xeriscape), they can generate enough water savings to serve an entire new residence without the City having to produce any additional water. As customers experience these savings due to outdoor conservation the hope is they will apply additional conservation techniques indoors for even greater savings.
