Can I apply for a position any time I wish?
The City of Avondale only accepts applications for open positions, that is, any position which has been announced and for which we are actively recruiting.

How will I know what jobs I'm qualified for and when to apply?
Whenever a position becomes available for open recruitment, the City of Avondale’s Human Resources Department posts an announcement on our web site at for the position. The recruitment announcement contains a brief description of duties, statement of minimum qualifications training and experience, and a description of any special qualifications which may be required, i.e., licenses, certifications, etc. A closing date appears on every recruiting announcement. You must be certain your application is completed on line by 5:00 p.m. Arizona time on the closing date.

What does “subject to closing without notice when the needs of the City are met” mean?
When this deadline-free approach is indicated on the recruitment announcement, it means that the position will close without notice once a sufficient number of applications from qualified individuals have been received. Applications will be reviewed on a daily basis, and preliminary interviews may be conducted by the hiring department before the recruitment closes.

How do I apply?
You may complete an application and any supplemental documentation required, if applicable, on the City of Avondale web site, Computers are available at the City Libraries (Sam Garcia and/or Civic Center).

In order for your application to receive the consideration it deserves, it is very important that you fill out the application completely, even if you attach a resume. Do not state ‘see resume’ when asked to describe your responsibilities and experience. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of information you provide on the application itself. Your resume is reviewed for clarification purposes.

An application supplemental questionnaire may be required. This supplement needs to be completed and attached with your application.

If you need any assistance in filling out an application online contact Human Resources at 623-333-2200.

How does the Human Resources Department determine if I qualify for a position?
The Human Resources staff member assigned to the recruitment reviews the application materials submitted to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications and special requirements as stated on the job recruitment notice.

Include all experiences that may apply to the job, i.e., volunteer experience, licenses, professional affiliations, classes you have taken, training you have received and any other special qualifications. With accurate and complete information, we will be able to determine whether you meet the minimum qualifications for the job.

To whom may I FAX my application?
No faxed applications are accepted. All applications must be completed on line at

Can I just leave an application or resume?
Only on-line applications are accepted. All City positions require an application. Resumes are accepted as attachments to the on line application for all open and announced positions. Other application materials also may be required for specific positions.

Can I use one application for more than one position?
Your application is saved and can be linked to more than one position. Each time you want to apply for another open position, click on apply on-line for that position. Your application will automatically be linked to this position. You can apply for as many positions as you wish.

What should I do if my address or phone number changes?

If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number or email address, your name may be withdrawn from further consideration.

Test Scores

If a test is given, does everyone who applies take the test?
Before any decision is made regarding who should be invited to a test, each application is reviewed based upon the minimum requirements of the position. The City will invite candidates whose experience and training match the City's requirements for the position to take part in the competitive testing process.

When will a notice with my test results be mailed?
Avondale releases test results only through a website. Information regarding accessing test results will be explained at the testing process. We do not mail out test results.

What happens after I file my applications?
After the applications have been screened for the minimum qualifications, the decision will be made of who will be interviewed or tested. If you are invited to be tested, you will be notified by email of the time and date. If you are invited to be interviewed, you will be called or be notified by email. You can always check your profile for status of application.

What is an eligibility list?
An Eligibility List is the list that is established after recruitment has been conducted and the applications have been reviewed and any testing and interview process is completed. Usually, eligibility lists expire six months from the date the position closes; however, the Human Resources Department may extend the life of an eligibility list.

Interview Selection Process

What are the steps or stages of the selection process?
The steps of the selection process vary depending upon the position. For example, an application screening and selection interview may be all that is required. On the other hand, you may be required to pass a written exam or physical. A performance test may be required for a position requiring certain skills, such as typing or the operation of heavy equipment. For other positions, you may be required to participate in an oral board examination. Decisions about the selection process are made by the hiring department and Human Resources when the position opens.

How are interviews established?
After the evaluation/testing process, an eligible-for-hire list is established for the position. The hiring department will review the applications and select applicants for interviews. The Human Resources Department will contact the selected applicants by e-mail or telephone for an interview.

What should I do if I am called for a selection interview?
Be sure that you know:
  • time and place you should appear for the interview;
  • phone number (important if you can’t make it or an emergency occurs)
  • name of person who contacted you;
  • to whom you should report for the interview;
  • how long the interview is scheduled to take; and
  • the job for which you are being considered.

What should I do if I need a reasonable accommodation during the selection process?
Contact the Human Resources Department at (623) 333-2200 or the TDD line at (623) 478-3498.

What if I am not selected or not interviewed?
Our objective is to hire the best person for the job, so competition is keen. If you are not successful in getting a job immediately, do not be discouraged if you do not get a job offer the first time you apply. Try again.

Does the Human Resources Department perform the selection interviews?
A member of the Human Resources Department is usually a part of the interview panel for all city positions. However, the final selection decision is the responsibility of the department director or city executive management depending upon the position. The Human Resources Department recruits, screens, and tests applicants based upon general requirements for the position in order to create a pool of eligible candidates for consideration. The supervisors or managers in the department where the vacancy actually exists are in a better position to evaluate each candidate's suitability for the particular job.
