Council Member David C. Iwanski and his wife, Sherri, have been residents of Avondale since May of 2004. He received his B. A. from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was born and raised and his J. D. from Pepperdine University School of Law in California. After law school he served 4 years on active duty with the Army as a Judge Advocate successfully completing tours of duty on Okinawa, Japan and at the Pentagon. Dave then went to work for Arizona Congressman Eldon Rudd, as the Appropriations Committee staffer; and, after the Congressman retired; he received an appointment from Secretary of Interior Don Hodel to become the Director of the Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs for the Bureau of Reclamation. He moved to Arizona in December of 1986 to become Glendale's first Director of Water Resources; and, subsequently worked for the Agri-Business Council, the City of Goodyear, and now as the first ever Executive Director of the AZ Water Association. Prior to his appointment to Council, Mr. Iwanski served on the City's Planning Commission for 5 years (the last 2 as its Chair), the Police Retirement Board, the Fire Retirement Board, and the Parks, Recreation and Library Board. He was also very active in promoting passage of the General Plan Amendment and Avondale's new branding effort. He insists that his "door is always open" to anyone who lives, works, recreates or invests in Avondale.
