Bag Central Station
Bag Central Station LogoBag Central Station
The city of Avondale has partnered with the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance and area grocery stores to create Bag Central Station, a solution to the problem of plastic bags. The city has created a volunteer program that provides easy disposal of plastic bags, regardless of their origin, and encourages the use of reusable shopping bags.

Valley wide residents consume more than 300 million plastic bags annually. The Avondale residential recycling program does not accept the bags, but now residents will have easy and plentiful opportunities to recycle bags at prominent displays at the entrances of their local grocery store under the sign Bag Central Station. The bags will be recycled into new plastic bags and building material. See what the City does recycle. The Bag Central Station allows residents and businesses to recycle plastic bags as well as many other plastic materials that are not accepted in the City's commingled recycling system.

Who can participate in Avondale Bag Central Station?
Everyone! The City of Avondale partners with local grocery stores and Arizona Food Marketing Alliance to promote the on-site plastic bag recycling program. Residents, businesses, and visitors are welcome to drop off their plastic bags and wrap at any Avondale grocery store.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink
In addition to recycling plastic bags, Avondale Bag Central partners encourage everyone to decrease the use of plastic bags and increase the use reusable shopping bags.

Why Plastic Bags?
Plastic Bags are not biodegradable and an incredible amount of finite resources are used in their production. These plastic bags often end up in our waterways, roads, parks, surrounding forests, and can be a hazard to wildlife. The City of Avondale is committed to educating the public on rethinking options for plastic bags.

Helpful hints to remember your reusable bags
  • Keep your bags in your car or purse so you have them every time you go out.
  • Make a note on your grocery list to grab the bags before you leave the house.
  • Get the kids in on it! Have them be the ones to get excited and bring the bags with them when you take them along shopping.
  • If you only have a couple of easy-to-carry items, and are asked if you would like a bag say " no, thank you"  If you are not asked if you would like a bag say "I don't need a bag, thank you." Simple.
  • You are more than likely not the only person who forgot their bag. Encourage the stores you shop at to get staff to remind customers when right when they walk in to get their reusable bag and for management to put up more signs outside the doors with reminders.
  • If you do forget your reusable bags, and have to use plastic because you are unable to carry the groceries out, remember to bring them back to recycle at the Bag Central Station Where Plastic Bags Belong at your favorite participating grocery or retail store.
  • Remember, keeping the Avondale community clean and beautiful starts with you!
  • Make it a habit! and kick the (plastic) bag habit.
