After passing through the treatment cells, the water then flows through an underground pipeline to the city’s recharge facility along the east bank of the Agua Fria River. There the water is diverted into one of four basins where it is allowed to percolate back into the aquifer. The aquifer is the layer beneath the earth’s crust where groundwater is stored. Converting this surface water into ground water (recharging) allows the city to pump groundwater from their wells and distribute it to their residents.
