Twenty-three nonprofit agencies that provide services and programs to our Avondale community received a combined total of $100,000 in funding as part of the City of Avondale’s Contributions Assistance program. Representatives from the various agencies joined Avondale’s mayor, councilmembers and city staff at a check presentation ceremony held at City Hall on Aug. 2.

The City of Avondale was recently assigned new credit ratings by Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s rating agencies as part of its upcoming bond sale and refinancing. Standard and Poor’s affirmed the AA rating to both the City’s pledged revenue (excise tax) and water and sewer system bonds.

Event activities include family entertainment and activities, a three day carnival, live musical entertainment, displays that showcase services offered by the city, the ever popular parade, and more. The city is encouraging everyone to Save the Date, and get involved! The city is seeking parade entries, festival exhibitors and vendors, business sponsors, community partners and volunteers.

The Avondale Police Department's Annual "Shop with a Cop" holiday shopping spree is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2016. Since its inception, Avondale’s Shop with a Cop program has touched the lives of more than 250 children, creating a wonderful holiday experience for those who have been victims of a crime. The Avondale Police Department is able to provide this opportunity to approximately 25 - 30 youth every year, thanks in part to the contributions from area residents and businesses.

Former Avondale educator Belen Moreno will be Grand Marshal of the Billy Moore Days Parade, the City of Avondale announced this week. Following a seven-year hiatus, the popular community festival known as Billy Moore Days will return to Avondale Oct. 21, 22, and 23. Events will take place in Historic Avondale, kicking off with the city’s annual the Resident Appreciation and GAIN Night on Friday, Oct. 21; the Billy Moore Days Parade on Saturday, and a three-day-long carnival on Western Avenue.

Avondale’s Neighborhood & Family Services Department is collecting backpack and school supply donations before the next academic year. Each year Avondale distributes hundreds of backpacks filled with supplies, to students in grades Pre-K-8 who are in need that live in the communities of Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park. To help local students start the year right, Avondale is asking for school supply donations.

Avondale’s much-anticipated renovation of Friendship Park begins on June 20, 2016, resulting in the park’s closure through early September. The extensive park project will provide more parking; improve ingress and egress into the park; enhanced open spaces and sports fields; more family picnic areas; a new restroom and renovation of an existing restroom, and a new 1800 square foot splash pad.

Tree planting, and removal of existing play equipment will take place on Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 a.m. Playground installation will take place on Saturday, April 30, beginning at 8 a.m. and will conclude with a picnic lunch celebration.

The Avondale City Council last night voted to increase its water rate by 7.5 percent and sewer rate by 6 percent, based on a recommendation proposed by city staff. This rate increase, which takes effect for billings beginning in March, is the first utility rate increase in the city since 2009.

Floats, balloons, horses, bands and entertainers are ready to march through Goodyear and Avondale for the fifth annual Tale of Two Cities Parade, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016. "A Tale of Two Cities" parade will feature approximately 90 colorful entries, decorated floats, marching bands, cultural dance groups, local celebrities and state political figures, community organizations, antique cars, school clubs, scouts, and more.

The City of Avondale’s Neighborhood and Family Services Department, together with Valley of the Sun United Way offers no cost tax preparation services to benefit individuals and families with low to moderate income. Services will be offered to the community every Tuesday and Saturday beginning in February at the Care1st Avondale Resource & Housing Center, as well as at an upcoming Blow Out event on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Calling all book lovers! Sam Garcia Western Avenue Library will hold a special book sale starting Monday, February 22 through Sunday, March 6, 2016. Hundreds of books will be on sale, such as adult, young adult and children’s books including hardbacks, paperbacks, fiction, non-fiction and Spanish publications. Prices range from 25 cents for children’s books to $1.00 for adult hardback books, or pick up a bag of books for $3! Shop early in the sale for the best selection.

The Readiness Basket empowers parents to be their child’s first teacher. The Readiness Basket, a bilingual (English/Spanish) training, is an exciting interactive parent and child learning workshop series offered through various AZ schools and community sites. The program is offered to parents, caregivers and their young children ages 0 – 5. During eleven, two hour sessions, parents discuss issues vital to parenting, brain development, the importance of play, discipline techniques and school readiness.

Avondale residents will have a role in helping to design a new playground at Friendship Park! An online survey is now open for the public to vote on four colorful and fun options for the layout of new playground equipment at Friendship Park, located at 12325 W McDowell Rd, which will soon undergo a major $3.1 million renovation. Construction of the playground will commence in March and open for families to enjoy in April. Meanwhile, construction of other major park improvements will begin later this spring and be completed by fall.

The City will hold a Public Hearing on Feb. 16, 2016, at which time, the Avondale City Council will consider proposed changes to its utility rates, and is expected to vote on this issue. If approved, rate changes would take effect for billings beginning in March, 2016. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at Avondale City Hall Council Chambers, 11465 W. Civic Center Drive, Avondale.

Avondale’s Public Works Department announces the first annual Holiday Used Cooking Oil Drive! The City of Avondale has teamed up with REVBiodiesel to pilot the program at no cost to the City and its residents. Avondale will be the first West Valley city to pilot a program like this. The goal of the campaign is to reduce the amount of sewer blockages and overflows caused by fats, oils, and grease (FOG) disposed of down the drain by residents.

The City of Avondale’s Development and Engineering Services Department kicks off a new program to facilitate “speed-to-market” processes for the business and development community, as well as residents. Beginning the week of Oct. 21, the Department will launch the Over the Counter Plan Reviews program, which covers most minor plan submissions. Applicants will receive same-day review, approval and permits for plans that previously may have taken up to three weeks.
